Strawberry Hill – Large Garden

Following the success of the garden developed on Kew Green the greenhouse supplier Alitex recommended me to a client in Strawberry Hill.

The children’s former play area was the site chosen for the greenhouse and was re-purposed as a vegetable garden.  A dilapidated Wendy house and summerhouse were removed, and an ancient apple tree was retained as a sculptural support for a climbing rose and clematis.

An attractive hexagonal summerhouse with additional storage by Malvern Garden Buildings was sourced, and Indian limestone paving with a brick trim laid to create an al fresco seating area, and ease access to the greenhouse.  Bound gravel paths and a formal pond with fountain were included, bringing added texture and interest.

Many of the shrubs in the garden had become overgrown and were therefore pruned, removed, or re-located within the garden to bring in light and allow the development of the vegetable and flowerbeds.

A splendid wisteria climbing over an existing timber support was given more prominence by creating a new flowerbed on either side. The planting beyond the vegetable plot followed a green, cream, and white theme to enhance the existing silver birch trees.

I have maintained a close interest in this garden and have returned to renovate the planting to the front of the house, replacing some sombre evergreen trees with a fresh green beech hedge and a varied group of flowering shrubs and perennials.

The garden development has been a great success, bringing much joy to the client who is now growing the same tasty tomatoes as her mother did years ago. And passers-by are now stopping to photograph the plants at the front!
